I had anticipated clearing out a few beds and preparing the soil for some planting this week. As it happened, my schedule outside of the garden pushed my major workdays to Friday and Saturday. It turns out I’m glad I didn’t turn out the beds, disrupt the soil or get any seeds into the ground. Most likely the beds would have turned to pools of mud, and the seeds washed away in the rains from Tropical Storm Beta. As the weekend approached and the rainfall predictions began to climb, I decided not to risk it and postponed the digging and bed prep until the storm has passed. TS Beta has been particularly slow, and is now predicted to stick around, not completely clearing the Houston area until sometime Wednesday. I can’t really complain. As far as our immediate area is concerned, we could use the rain. The native landscape was really looking water stressed, and even though we have had a few good thunderstorms, what we really needed was a good soaking rain. I’m sure the wildlife is enjoying the fresh water as well.
Despite postponing the planting, all in all Overleaf will come out of this in a good place. The ground will be well irrigated, and we still have plenty of warm sunny weather ahead to get seeds started.
Next Week: Next week I get to complete the projected jobs from last week. Pull the reaining okra plants and prep the bed for winter crops. Remove the tomatoes that are not producing. Remove the “Hugelkultur” experimental bed and add soil to make up for the bulk of the removed wood. Place stepping stones where possible and finally, prep the beds and plant seeds for the Autumn/Winter garden. As long as the Tropics behave.
